John K I saw this movie, centering around the lust for goal in the old southwest, when it was first released, as a young teen at a theater in Hollywood. I liked it just fine and even saw it again when it came to our local theater in So Cal. I saw it one more time recently on You Tube and I can safely write here that it is probably the worst version of a big Hollywood production to ever see the light of day. Not that it doesn't have some redeeming qualities that I will mention now. The film was beautifully shot in and around the Grand Canyon when it wasn't using the studio to shoot scenes with the most inane dialogue ever, directed by the normally reliable J Lee Thompson. Despite the great outdoor locations, many scenes on horseback were shot in said studio with awful green-screen backgrounds, or whatever passed for FX in 69.The other nice touch was to give non dialogue supporting roles to Ted Cassidy and Julie Newmar as Apaches aiding the gold seekers, even though they are attempting to loot a canyon filled with Apache gold. They are the only redeeming characters in a film crammed with top flight movie stars of the day who all compete to see who can turn in the worst performance of their careers.I have read where this movie eventually realized a profit, gaining overseas popularity, especially in The Soviet Union, of all places. I have also read how much France goes crazy over Jerry Lewis films. The mind boggles.
