The Wall Street Journal has presented a specially-commissioned weekly crossword puzzle since 1998.

The Wall Street Journal Crossword Contest puzzles are just like normal crosswords, but with one big difference: somewhere in each puzzle there's a secret word or phrase hiding, and you've got to figure out where and what it is.

1. The New York Times Crossword. Renowned for its sophistication and wordplay, The New York Times Crossword is arguably the gold standard in the world of puzzles. Under the editorship of Will Shortz since 1993, these crosswords are known for their clever themes, challenging clues, and cultural relevance.

How hard could it be? The Saturday crossword is actually the hardest puzzle of the week. Mondays have the most straightforward clues and Saturday clues are the hardest, or involve the most wordplay. Contrary to popular belief, the Sunday puzzles are midweek difficulty, not the hardest.

This means that crossword puzzles can improve thinking and memory almost as much as an FDA-approved memory-enhancing medication. The other thing to keep in mind is that about half of people with mild cognitive impairment show declines in thinking and memory over time.

Now to selling crossword puzzles

Larger newspapers and magazines tend to have regular, in-house crossword compilers. But don't be put off approaching those who do… they still buy puzzles from freelancers sometimes. And this could be your foot in the door to get a job as in-house compiler in future.

Scan through the clues, and knock out all the easiest ones. Not only will this give your gameplay some structure, but also it'll give you an ego boost! Typically, fill-in-the-blank clues are the easiest. For example: “___ of Oz.”

Compilers of cryptic crosswords are commonly called setters in the UK and constructors in the US. Particularly in the UK, a distinction may be made between cryptics and quick (i.e. standard) crosswords, and sometimes two sets of clues are given for a single puzzle grid.

Literal Clues: In a special type of clue called an &lit the clue's definition and cryptic halves are the same (“and literally so”). You may also see the term all-in-one for these types of clues. This is usually indicated by an exclamation point at the end of the clue. An &lit clue does not have a division.
